What do we do?
Throughout the year we hold regular social events ranging from champagne and cocktail evenings, meals and parties to the highlight of our social calendar which is the Annual Law Ball. For members, the events are heavily subsidised and often free. They all provide those who attend with the opportunity to network with other students and often with legal professionals who come to represent the sponsors of these events.
SNR Denton Freshers Meal and Drinks
Our first event held in the new academic year was to welcome all incoming Law Society members. This event was kindly sponsored by SNR Denton and saw just over one hundred new Law Society members enjoy a sumptuous Italian meal at La Spaghettata, one of Durham’s most popular restaurants and a firm favourite with students. The event provided the perfect opportunity for new members to socialise with other fellow Law students as well as executive team members in an informal and relaxed setting. After a fantastic meal, all members enjoyed complimentary drinks at the upstairs bar, Fabios where the evening carried on. Attendees were given insight into the great value their Law Society membership offers and the active social scene that accompanies this.
Baker and McKenzie Champagne and Chocolates Evening
An intensely popular event held at Durham’s most exclusive bar, Ebony this event was kindly sponsored by Baker & McKenzie. Upon arrival, attendees were treated to a champagne reception and spoiled by a large selection of Belgian chocolates and cheese boards along with other nibbles. Baker & McKenzie trainees and members of the graduate recruitment team also attended the event giving members the perfect chance to network and gain a deeper understanding of what Baker & McKenzie offers.
The evening continued with live entertainment which added to the already buzzing atmosphere. Attendees also received cocktails from some of Durham’s finest bartenders. The night was a clear success for the Law Society, with many members stating how enjoyable the evening.

Simmons and Simmons Cocktails
Held at Fat Buddha, a premier cocktail bar and home of fine Asian dining, this event gave members the invaluable opportunity to gain application tips from Simmons & Simmons trainees, associates and even partners. It was a rare chance for members to network with lawyers at multiple levels and turned out to be most informative.
Generous portions of Asian tapas were provided along with exotic cocktails containing the likes of passionfruit and lychee fruit, all of which went down extremely well with both attendees from the Law Society and Simmons & Simmons. As usual, this event was also popular as it allowed members to gain an inside view of the firm in a beautiful setting.

Olswang Evening
An enjoyable and informative night with Olswang might mark the first of many more intimate social events with law firms. After enjoying great curry and drinks at the local Indian restaurant Shaheens, law society students were invited to ask questions of the Olswang trainees, associate and partner in a ‘BBC question time’ style session in the restaurant itself.
After giving some thoughtful and enlightening answers on subjects including the culture and personality aspects of the firm, and how the legal sector is changing, Olswang invited all students to join them for drinks in the cocktail bar Fabios. It gave students who were not lucky enough to be sitting next to a rep the chance to talk with them in relaxed setting. Overall the night had a perfectly intimate social atmosphere, giving Olswang the chance to shine to potential applicants.

BPP Wine Tasting
A bespoke wine tasting event held at the stunning location of Durham Cathedral, this event saw members being treated to an intimate wine tasting session conducted by the executive of St Chad’s Wine Cellar. Sponsored by BPP, the evening kicked off with a rosé reception and attendees being showed to their tables.
Tom Willmott, head of St Chad’s Wine Cellar and Jonas Ahlstrom, treasurer talked members through how to taste wine, the key differences between red and white and the importance of colour and smell to determining the flavour of a wine. Attendees were given the benefit of tasting six wines, both white and red from various regions and of different strengths. Overall, the evening proved to be extremely insightful and saw the birth of future wine aficionados!

An Evening with Jones Day: Oldfields
Sign up for this event filled up quickly and many were disappointed at missing out on the chance to mix with Jones Day trainees during a 3 course meal at highly regarded local restaurant Oldfield’s. Those who did manage to get a place were rewarded with great food and conversation by the trainees, who made sure to swap tables between every course and ensure all guests benefitted from their experiences and tips on applying.
Afterwards attendees were given free cocktails in Ebony, which is a treat in anyone’s book, and enjoyed the company of the Jones Day trainees who brought a personable and sociable approach to the evening.
