College of Law
At The College of Law you’ll get the best possible start to your legal career. With centres in Birmingham, Bristol, Chester, Guildford, London, Manchester and York, we’re the UK’s No 1 law school. Our innovative courses are designed and taught by lawyers, with a clear focus on building the practical skills, commercial awareness and independent thinking you’ll need to succeed in practice. This is supported by an award-winning pro bono programme, the largest and best-resourced careers service in UK legal education and excellent tutor support.
GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN LAW (full-time/part-time/S-mode)
Designed to build knowledge and skills that more than match a law degree – with a clear focus on preparing you for life in practice. Academic training is built around real-life examples and case studies, and you’ll be given research assignments that directly reflect the way you’ll work as a lawyer. Students who pass our GDL are guaranteed a place on our LPC (as long as they apply within two years), and if you go on to successfully complete your LPC or BPTC at the College you’ll graduate with an LL.B law degree, without the need to study or pay for additional modules.
LEGAL PRACTICE COURSE (full-time/part-time/S-mode)
Our LPC is rigorous and practical – equipping you with the skills you need to succeed in practice. We have the widest selection of elective subjects available and offer three different LPC routes, allowing you to specialise in your chosen field: corporate, commercial & private and legal aid. The majority of teaching is in small, student-centred groups and the course features extensive use of multi-media learning resources. Students who successfully complete our LPC will earn credits towards our LL.M Masters degrees.
BAR PROFESSIONAL TRAINING COURSE (full-time/part-time)
Our BPTC has been designed to resemble practice as closely as possible. Study follows a logical, realistic process from initial instruction to final appeal and learning is based around the seven core skills and three knowledge areas stipulated by the Bar Standards Board. Most of your learning will be in small groups and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to put your learning into action through: practitioner evenings, mock trials, court visits, mooting, negotiating and advocacy competitions, and pro bono. Students who successfully complete our BPTC will earn credits towards our LL.M Masters degrees.
LL.M MASTERS DEGREES (A-mode/S-mode)
Our Masters degrees are truly professional qualifications and reflect cutting-edge approaches to legal practice. We offer a wide choice of flexible, specialist modules to suit your area of interest and enhance your expertise. You can study for an LL.M in either Professional Legal Practice or International Legal Practice.
J.D (Juris Doctor Programme)
Our Juris Doctor qualification (JD) allows you to prepare to dual qualify in England & Wales and in the US by giving you access to the New York State Bar exam as well as the qualifications required to start either a training contract or pupillage here.
It will offer a quick and easy route towards dual qualification, by allowing anyone who has studied a full-time GDL and full-time LPC or BVC/BPTC with us to then undertake an additional 22-week US Gateway course. Upon successful completion of the above, you will receive a JD qualification from the College which uniquely from a UK based law school, will then allow you to sit the New York State Bar exam.
